The Hispanic-American History Timeline
Hernando de Soto and his men explore the territory that later became Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. They celebrated America's first Christmas and discovered the Mississippi River. Their four-year, 4,000-mile hike finally lost its drive when de Soto died of fever at the banks of the Mississippi, where he was buried in 1542.
